What is Chronic Lyme Disease?
The Mayo Clinic describes Lyme disease as an illness caused by borrelia bacteria. Humans usually get Lyme disease from the bite of a tick carrying the bacteria. Ticks that can carry borrelia bacteria live throughout most of the United States. But Lyme disease is most common in the upper Midwest and the northeastern and mid-Atlantic states. It's also common in Europe and in south central and southeastern Canada.
You're at risk of Lyme disease if you spend time where the ticks live, such as grassy, brushy or wooded areas. Taking safety measures in these areas can lower the risk of Lyme disease. Chronic Lyme disease occurs when a person who’s treated with antibiotic therapy for the disease continues to experience symptoms. The condition is also referred to as post Lyme disease syndrome or post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome.
According to the New England Journal of Medicine, approximately 10 to 20 percent of people who are treated with the recommended antibiotics will have disease symptoms that persist after they complete treatment. These symptoms can include fatigue, joint or muscle aches, and cognitive dysfunction. They may last up to six months or longer. These symptoms can interfere with a person’s normal activities and may cause emotional distress as a result.

Chronic Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that is acquired by an infected tick bite that carries the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. In most cases, Lyme disease can be cured within 2-4 weeks with oral antibiotic treatments if diagnosed in the early stage. However, Chronic Lyme Disease is when an individual still experiences a persistent ongoing symptom for more than six months after completing their antibiotic therapy treatment. Chronic Lyme Disease also affects the cognitive function and produces musculoskeletal pain that lasts for months or even years.
Chronic Lyme Disease Symptoms
Chronic Lyme disease has similar symptoms as the early stage of Lyme disease but with a lingering effect. Individuals often experience severe fatigue, headaches, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, restless sleep, neck stiffness, numbness, or tingle in the hands or feet, joints or muscle aches, and pain or inflammation in the knee and other large joints. Chronic Lyme disease affects the cognitive function by decreasing their short-term memories and difficulty with speech and concentration.
Risk Factors:
Tick bite that carries the infected disease
Not treating tick bite immediately
Acupuncture to Benefit Chronic Lyme Disease
Acupuncture and herbal medicine induce homeostatic response on the cellular level by influencing the body’s internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities. They stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system. Acupuncture helps chronic Lyme disease by reversing autonomic dysfunction, reduces inflammation, relieves muscular pain, and improves their quality of life. Acupuncture is safe and painless. There are no drugs or hazardous equipment used, and no surgical operation performed.
