I am 89 years old, and I suffered ten years with trigeminal neuralgia on my lower left jaw. Trigeminal neuralgia has affected my personal life; I couldn't eat, chew, swallow, or speak. I would feel pain on my face all day, every day. It was so painful that I couldn't brush my teeth or sleep. 

My primary physician said it was typical for people my age to have trigeminal neuralgia and prescribed medication to reduce grinding and pain. Since October 2014, I suffered from sciatic nerve pain and back pain from lower back degeneration. Work was hard in heavy construction and my condition was getting worse. It started with sciatic pain to my bottom, then to the leg and calves. It traveled to the ankles and foot and 3 toes went numb. I laid in bed for one week and it wasn’t getting better. About 10 years ago, an injury to my back brought on peripheral neuropathy. There was damage to the nerve (L5-S1) and lab tests confirmed these findings. In November 2017, a few months after having back surgery, I noticed my left foot showed “drop foot.” My left foot would occasionally fall which made walking difficult without a cane or walker. It caused my social drinking life to slow down because I wasn’t comfortable being around friends with my drop foot. After several testing, I was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy.

I started with physical therapy in hopes to improve my drop foot. After six months, it helped a little, but it didn’t provide as much improvement since they didn’t seem to know how else to help me with my condition. I also tried massage therapy, and that did not help either, but the massage therapist did recommend that I try acupuncture. On August 9, 2018, I had a consultation with Dr. Huang. I expressed my struggle with peripheral neuropathy on my left foot and how it has impacted my personal life and social life. NUMBNESS OF THE LEGS | I HAVE STEADILY REGAINED FEELING | NEUROPATHY, MOBILITY AND INJURY

My name is J.L., and I’m 72 years old. In recent years, I had experienced (and mentioned to my doctor) frequent and gradually increasing numbness in my legs and feet. Thankfully, no pain. Then in 2013 I experienced 3 accidental falls over the course of one year. Although I addressed these injuries and resolved them through acupuncture and physical therapy, the resultant lack of confidence/fear of falling began to significantly impact my mobility and willingness to venture out.

Meanwhile, the neuropathy progressed. I am not diabetic, and an ultrasound ruled out arterial narrowing, but nonetheless my legs were often numb and felt very unstable. By now I was relying on a cane, and then a walker, even to move a short distance in my home. I decided to try acupuncture to regain the feeling in my legs. In November of 2017, I met with Dr. Huang and he expressed his firm belief that he could help me. I began treatment 3 times a week (acupuncture supplemented by his recommended herbal medicine) and I have steadily regained feeling – and some strength – in my legs, which has enabled me to start physical therapy to be able to eventually walk without assistance or fear. 

In the meantime, my primary care doctor referred me for the first time to a neurologist for evaluation. On May 3 the clinical evaluation of Dr. at Health Care Partners was that my neuropathy is very mild. I am sure that reflects the improvement for which I credit Dr. Huang. When I first came to Agape Natural Health in November, I would have never felt ready or able to start physical therapy. I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia on my lower left jaw in January 2017, It was the most painful thing I have ever felt to a point that I can’t talk, eat and brush my teeth. The pain started back in December 2016, at first I thought it was a toothache coming from tooth crown.  After numerous visits to my dentist and from dental x-ray they couldn’t find anything wrong with my tooth. In January 2017, I went to see a neurosurgeon, went through MRI and was diagnosed with TN. He gave me several options including open surgery from the back of my skull, and this freaked me out. I went home to think this surgery option through with my wife, and luckily, my wife found this alternative option through acupuncture. I have never been to acupuncture session before in my life but this time I thought I would give it a try. 

On February 18, 2017 I went to see Dr. Huang for the first time. I started the acupuncture sessions 3 times a week and started taking herbs/nutrition that Dr. Huang recommended. The first 2 weeks I didn’t feel any improvement yet but starting week 3 I felt a bit of improvement in terms of pain frequency. I suffered from trigeminal neuralgia and headaches on and off for over 5 years. I knew there wasn’t a cure. It began because my body was weakened and stressed. I had been treated for cancer 14 years ago and had surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, which contributed to the weakening of my body.

When the neuralgia flare-ups occurred, I had a faint pain over the left side of my face and head. At its worst, I have been incapacitated for 3 to 4 days in bed and I wouldn’t be able to function. Headaches would continue for 4 to 6 weeks and residual headaches made it hard to concentrate. I saw an internist who wanted me to take anti-seizure medication. I took drugs including Motrin, none of which helped, and I tried to let it ride out. Western medicine is not successful in treating trigeminal neuralgia.

On January 18, 2005, I came to the Agape Natural Health. I was in a lot of pain and was led here one day for a reason. I have always believed in complimentary or alternative medicine, and I knew that I was going to get relief. Patient CJ came into Agape Natural Health seeking for treatment to relieve his back pain and sciatic nerve pain due to two bulging discs, a condition in which the inner portion of the intervertebral disc that provides shock-absorbing cushion begins to protrude from the outer wall of the disc, in his lumbar region. CJ was experiencing lower back pains that radiated down to the back of his left leg. Unknown to his condition, he went to his primary care orthopedic doctor to get his back checked out. After performing a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), his orthopedic physician confirmed that CJ has two bulging discs in his lumbar region. CJ developed his condition as a contractor that does continuous heavy lifting of objects that puts strains to his body. Over time and with age, the intervertebral discs begins to wear and tear and starts to dehydrate, and the cartilage stiffens that causes the disc to bulge and put pressure on the surrounding nerve root. His orthopedic physician recommended taking nonprescription pain medication to alleviate the pain and rest to reduce the amount of stress that is put on the spinal cord to allow the bulging disc to decrease and to prevent further compression to the spinal nerve. A bulging disc takes about six weeks to recover with limited posture movements; however, in some cases it can take longer. In his early sixties and a person with diabetes with a high level of glucose and poor blood circulation, CJ was prone to slower healing. Therefore, it would take longer to recover from bulging discs compared to a non-diabetic individual. 

After a week of suffering from back and leg pains, CJ was referred to Agape Natural Health by a friend who was troubled about his health. On June 20, 2017, CJ came in for a consultation to discuss his health concerns to Dr. Huang - how his bulging discs has affected his job performance, unable to complete tasks such as moving and lifting, his personal life of not being able to sleep at night, how walking has become challenging that prevented him from getting his daily exercise. The back pain and sciatic nerve were intolerable that over the counter pain medications weren’t helping him get any better. Dr. Huang recommends that he does a combination of acupuncture treatment and natural herbal medicine to restore his balance and promote healing. CJ decided to proceed with the acupuncture treatments and natural herbs right away. CJ followed Dr. Huang’s recommendation, and within the first week of treatment, his back pain was 25-30% better from the initial day he came into Agape Natural Health. As CJ continued his treatment program, his back pain lessened and was 50-60% better just after four acupuncture treatments. CJ was persistent on coming in three times a week for his acupuncture treatments and taking his natural herbal medicine daily because he knew that it was beneficial for his body. 

By maintaining his health, within two weeks his pain was 70% better and he was able to walk much better. Each time that CJ came in for his treatment, his recovery process kept strengthening his body by restoring his balance. By week four, CJ’s pain was 80% better and he no longer needed to take any over the counter pain reliever for his back. On August 15, 2017, CJ pain was pain-free. He no longer had any pain at his lower back region or experiences any sciatic nerve shooting down the back of his left leg. In October 2013, I went to soccer practice and the next morning I woke up with Bell’s Palsy. I wasn’t working because of a bone fracture and when I started work again this happened. My life was different because I didn’t feel half of my face. I stopped doing sports. I never heard about something like this and it was terrible. I go to the doctor and he tells me it’s Bell’s Palsy. On August 30, 2011, I had a stroke. It happened during a procedure for an angiogram to put in two stents. A piece of plaque was chipped off which caused the stroke. Prior to this ordeal, I was very happy and healthy. As a result of the stroke, I was paralyzed on the right side and could not walk. My speech was impeded and I couldn’t use my right hand until physical therapy. I also received speech therapy and occupational therapy. Recovering from a stroke takes time, the 90 day window is very important. I sought all the help I could get during those 90 days.
